"Bhoomi" or Earth, a musical band from Kolkata, is made up of five music lovers. The band was formed in 1999, with the aim of reviving the folk music of Bengal and making it popular amongst all sections of the society by providing it an urban touch.
Bhoomi has come a long way since its beginning, making a name not only in Bengal or in India but beyond too.
They achieved a rare distinction of becoming the only Indian band to have ever performed and received a standing ovation at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 12, 2006.
The band also is the only Indian band to have performed at the 29th Montreal Jazz Festival on June 28, 2008.
Bhoomi's oeuvre consists of baul, bhatiyali, jhumur and fakiri that stems out of Bengal's rural rituals and cults.
